National Museum of African Art to participate in Art Museum Day Celebration to feature Live Music, Meet and Greet with Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, and Twitter Exchange The National Museum of African Art will join museums all over the world in celebrating Art Museum Day on Friday, May 18. NMAFA will honor the occasion from 1-2pm with a live performance by Jabari Exum of Farafina Kan and a meet and greet with NMAfA Director Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole. "I visit my art museum because ..." is the tagline for this year's Art Museum Day and attendees will be invited to share their responses to the tagline via Twitter and on forms available at the museum. The completed forms will be posted in a mini-installation in the Museum's Pavilion. The public can also share their responses via Twitter and on the NMAfA Facebook page with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. "We are delighted to celebrate Art Museum Day 2012. I know how important art is to helping spark conversation, stimulate interaction, and share beauty and creativity. NMAfA is proud to offer a day for our visitors near and far to celebrate Art Museum Day." said Johnnetta B. Cole, director of the National Museum of African Art. Happy Mother's Day! African Cosmos: Stellar Arts on Twitter In advance of the opening of our upcoming exhibit African Cosmos: Stellar Arts, we're starting a dialogue on Twitter on the intersections of art and astronomy, and the impact of #culturalastronomy in Africa & beyond. Share your thoughts and join the discussion by following @africancosmos Haitian-Dominican Friendship Concert Wednesday, May 16, 7 pm Baird Auditorium, National Museum of Natural History 10th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, DC Join the National Museum of African Art and the Smithsonian Latino Center in a celebration of the music of the Dominican Republic and Haiti in a friendship concert that presents the African-derived musical traditions of the two island countries. Playing a set of merengues, boleros, and Latin jazz, Enriquillo Tejada y Los Clarinetes Mágicos will be followed by Tabou Combo, who will close the show with konpa and Haitian méringue music. Organized with the support of the Embassy of Haiti and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic. First come, first seated!
