Films

African cinema addresses a wide spectrum of the human experience. Themes include, among other topics, racism, self-determination, women's issues, politics, history, love, faith, religion.

Tours and Outreach

Tours are based on objects and themes reflected in the museum's collections and exhibitions. Visitors and groups of no more than 15 may request an unscheduled tour at the information desk in the museum's pavilion, subject to docent availability. These tours may be pre-empted by a selected exhibition tour. Museum representatives also travel to classrooms, community groups or senior centers to introduce audiences to African art.

Docent tours are offered Wednesdays at 11 AM, Thursdays at 11 AM and 3 PM, Fridays at 11 AM and Saturdays and Sundays at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM, subject to docent availability.

The NMAFA Performing arts programs bring to life the art and cultures of Africa. Since the summer of 2007 performing arts programs have increased and have featured local and African artists of dance, music, and spoken word.

The NMAFA Education Department also brings to life the art and cultures of Africa through workshops. These programs feature local and African artists, writers and educators. Please enjoy some of the workshop highlights through these photos and video.

Clinics and Resources

African Art curators and conservators meet with the public to assess individual works of art and offer advice on the proper care of care of their collections.
