More/Less Information
This figure depicts a bride being publicly honored by her husband's household and village. It would have been displayed with others to honor a forest or water spirit. A Urhobo bride and the statue are both decorated with red camwood mixed with palm oil. Red represents life and is a symbol of fertility, mystery and danger. Representations of ivory anklets, metal bracelets and beads suggest an important place in the community.
