Ede is a Kalabari word meaning "bed for lying in state." The word church indicates this is an ede for a Christian wake. Church Ede is Sokari Douglas Camp’s memorial to her father, Chief Ngogo Obene George Douglas, who died in 1984.
Because of its personal significance, Douglas Camp welded Church Ede in steel, a more permanent material than her usual materials of wood, cloth and found objects. The bed shakes, symbolizing the continuance of her father’s vital force in the afterlife.
