An elephant attacks an African man who has dropped his gun, while another man raises his gun to shoot the elephant. Two people--one clapping and one sitting on the ground, holding a bag, and hiding his face--look on. Elephant ivory was an important trade item for the Kongo, even though it was a rare commodity by the mid 1800s when the tusk was carved.
