Thematic tours
Tailored to the needs of specific grades or ages of the group, these tours are based on objects and themes reflected
in the museum's exhibitions.
Monday-Friday
10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Maximum 40 participants
African Art for the First Time
Imaginative strategies and touchable objects--such as textiles, ceramic
vessels and wooden sculptures--help audiences learn to look at forms, materials and
techniques of African art.
African Masks and Their Many Faces
African masks are a hallmark of African visual and performance creativity. This tour focuses on why masks look the way they do, when they perform and what a masquerade means.

Up to 1 1/2 hours
Suitable for ages 6 and UpLearn about African polyrhythms and syncopation while examining a variety of African musical instruments, including the flute and percussion instruments, such as drums and gongs. Students have the opportunity to play instruments with Ugandan musician Daniel Ssuuna.
Africa in Motion
The National Museum of African Art has incorporated visual arts programming into its museum education to create an invigorating and stimulating learning environment in which children, adults and families can discover and appreciate the profound cultural traditions of Africa.

Up to 1 1/2 hours
Grade level: Elementary
Join storyteller and educator Diane Macklin for an interactive program that engages audiences and encourages young children to read. Classes may explore the museum's many exhibitions after the reading.
Outreach programs
African Art at Your Site
Day and time by arrangement
1 hour
Museum representatives travel to classrooms, community groups or senior centers to
introduce audiences to African art. The program site must be within 20 miles of the museum. Please allow one month to schedule your request. For schools, please schedule only one class per presentation.
Scheduling a program
Tours or programs may be scheduled online or by fax.
Allow three weeks to process your request.
Chaperones
One adult chaperone (over 21 years old) must accompany every 15 high school students
and every 10 elementary through junior high students. Failure to provide sufficient
chaperones or to maintain order may result in the group being asked to leave the museum.
Program Confirmation
You will receive a written confirmation of your program after it has been scheduled.
