The Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives celebrated American Archives Month on October 14th 2008 with a joint Open House tour and reception with the Freer and Sackler Gallery Archives. The Elisofon Archives tour highlighted the collections of photographers Eliot Elisofon and Constance Stuart Larrabee, as well as several rare historical collections including cartes-de-visite portraits from the 1860s and 1870s (Senegal) and an albumen cabinet card of a Benin altar (Nigeria) from 1891. The archives tours were attended by over 50 staff members from Smithsonian museums and archives, followed by a merry wine/cheese reception at the National Museum of African Art. It was a wonderful way to show off the recent renovation of the Elisofon Archives and to celebrate Archives month with the Freer/Sackler Archives and fellow Smithsonian staff!
